Nov 27, 2003 · That train was originally numbered 9 &10 ( after the #7 & 8 of the neighboring Empire Builder). Both trains used the Milwaukee Road route between Chicago and the Twin Cities. In about 1975 (I'm not sure exactly when, anymore), Amtrak introduced an overnight train between Chicago and the Twin Cities,which then went on to Duluth (MN).

Aug 21, 2008 · Before Amtrak ran the service, when Auto-Train was a private company, they expanded by creating a second route from Louisville to Sanford. This turned out to be a mistake and the route cost the company millions of dollars, hastening their ultimate demise, which cleared the way for Amtrak to launch the Auto-Train we know today.

That leaves CHI-NYC (Lakeshore Ltd), CHI-NOL (City of New Orleans) as candidates. Is there sufficient demand to even warrant a second passenger train much less an Auto Train on those routes?
