The Canucks had been "working hard" to find a trade partner for Miller, with CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal reporting increased activity around the 31-year-old earlier that day. Shortly after Dhaliwal's post on X, Friedman confirmed during "Saturday Headlines" that a trade involving Miller had collapsed at the last minute, according to his information.

Frustration boiled over as McDavid wrestled free and delivered a "brutal cross-check," as described by one of the Sportsnet game announcers, that struck Garland in the head, sending him to the ice.
