Te Anau is the place to stay. We stayed there in our rental camper late in June. This also makes sense with the weather in the Sounds. The road into the park was closed the morning of the day we arrived and checked in but opened in the afternoon in time for a beautiful sunset at Milford, then back to camp at Te Anau and a boat/bus/boat trip in Doubtful the next morning. We had a lucky two days of good weather. Frequent updates are posted locally and online due to the changeable conditions.

I don't think so but not 100% sure. There are many tour buses that do a fantastic job. My recommendation is to go with one of those tours. They will stop and show you things like waterfalls, small hikes etc. that you would not find on your own or in an Intercity bus.

We have 5 hours in Te Anau after our Doubtful sound trip before our glow worm tour. What should we do? Kepler Track? Eglinton Valley? A helicopter ride to Milford Sound? THANKS!
A:
Since the roads are VERY slow (2 lane, winding) driving somewhere will eat up your time. You can pick up a helicopter in Te Anau and view the Sound.
